Maths 

Mathematics at Oaklands is designed to support pupils in developing skills for independence, communication and everyday life. Through our Maths for Life (M4L) approach, we prioritize meaningful, functional learning that prepares pupils to apply mathematical understanding beyond the classroom. 

All pathways begin the year with a focus on familiarization, communication, and baseline assessment. Learning is then structured into carefully sequenced blocks, ensuring pupils revisit key concepts through repetition, overlearning and real-life application. Progress is supported through the OPAL mathematical steps, covering areas such as number, measure, money, time and problem solving. 

Teaching follows a mastery approach, where staff ensure that most pupils secure understanding before moving on. Learning is delivered through a combination of explicit teaching and practical exploration, using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods. Pupils are supported to generalise their skills across different contexts, including daily routines, community experiences and cross-curricular learning. 

Across all pathways, maths is embedded throughout the school day. Staff use consistent strategies, including modelling, structured talk, repetition and purposeful practice, to support engagement and progress. This ensures all pupils develop confidence, independence and transferable mathematical skills that support their journey into adulthood. 

Maths for Life 

We are committed to developing pupils’ mathematical understanding through our Maths for Life approach, where learning is meaningful, practical and linked to everyday experiences. Mathematics is taught as a key life skill, enabling pupils to develop independence, confidence and the ability to problem solve in real situations. 

We believe that pupils learn best when mathematical skills are embedded consistently across the school day. Staff provide opportunities to develop understanding through routines, communication and purposeful activities such as cooking, shopping and managing time. This supports pupils to apply their learning in familiar and new contexts. 

Our curriculum is structured through the OPAL mathematical steps, allowing staff to break learning into small, achievable stages. Pupils are supported to revisit and practise skills regularly, helping to build confidence and secure understanding over time.

Through consistent strategies and high-quality interactions, we ensure that all pupils are supported to engage, progress and develop skills that prepare them for adulthood. 

Maths in Daily Life 

Mathematics is embedded into daily routines to ensure that learning is meaningful and purposeful. Pupils develop skills through activities such as snack time, cooking, community visits and personal routines. 

These experiences support understanding of number, money, time and measure in real contexts. Pupils are encouraged to make choices, solve problems and communicate their understanding. 

Staff provide regular opportunities for pupils to practise skills across different settings, helping them to generalise their learning and build independence. 

This approach ensures that mathematics is relevant, engaging and directly linked to everyday life. 

Supporting Maths at Home 

We encourage families to support mathematical development through everyday activities at home. Simple experiences such as counting, cooking and talking about time help to reinforce learning. 

Maths For Life – A Differentiated Approach®  

Parents are supported through regular communication, with ideas shared to help build confidence and understanding. 

Our aim is to make mathematics accessible and relevant in a familiar environment. 

By working together, we can support pupils to develop important life skills.
